The Stipe Sikirica Gallery
The Gallery, named after the academic sculptor Stipe Sikirica who donated his entire ouvre to the town of Sinj, is located in the Alkarski dvori building.
Sikirica is one of the artists whose works are inextricably linked to Sinj, the Cetina region and Alka. The town’s identity relies upon Sikirica’s public monuments. Besides the public sculpture of the Horseman, placed at Alkarsko trkalište (Alka Race Track), Sikirica is the author of the Fountain “At a spring well” (better known as ” Luca”) and the Our Lady of Sinj church doors. These bronze doors with relief sculptures depict scenes from the history of Sinj and some faces in the crowd can be easily recognized as Sikirica’s friends. Sikirica has always been particularly attached to Alka so it is no wonder that the big shield he made for the Alka Duke has become integral part of the official Alka ceremony and that his gold coins have enriched the Alka Knights Assciation’s Numismatic Collection.
Today the Gallery houses over 500 works of Stipe Sikirica: sculptures, graphics, drawings and medals. Besides presenting and valorizing the artist’s work the gallery holds concerts, lectures, promotions, panel discussions, film nights and various workshops.
By presenting different art practices as well as New Media Art the Gallery has taken an active role in creating cultural changes on Sinj’s art scene. The Gallery tends to be a socially responsible institution open to all kinds of artistic expression. An excellent cooperation has been established with the local community, cultural institutions and associations, at home and abroad, a fact of which we are very proud. An important segment of the Gallery program is work with young emerging artists.
